The First Phase of the 29th Convocation of Kathmandu University was held at the central premises of Dhulikhel on 13th December 2023. With 1,838 students graduating from different schools and programs, the school has yet again graduated more women this year and proved its determination for equal access to education.
This grand ceremony was attended by Rt. Hon’ble Prime Minister and Chancellor of Kathmandu University, Mr. Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Science and Technology, Ms. Pramila Kumari, Nepal’s Pre-eminent physician and human rights activist, Divya Shatabdi Purush Dr. Gouri Shankar Lal Das, as the Chief Guest, University Registrar Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle, Senate members and the board of trustees of the University.
The Convocation program was commenced with Swastivachana by the students of Namisharanya Sanskrit Gurukul followed by a welcome speech by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa. He brought attention to Nepal’s vulnerable state due to rapid changes in our climatic conditions. He quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s passionate call, “Nepal’s mountains are crying out for help, and COP28 must respond.” Efforts in research and development, and commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development have been our university’s top concern, he said.
Rt. Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the University, Puspa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ praised Kathmandu University’s contribution to Nepal’s higher education for three decades. Especially in the recent world conference on climate change and adaptation, Dahal said that Nepal's education has progressed towards internationalization while raising the issue of the university's effective practical intervention. Dahal also expressed happiness that the university is about to start its teaching hospital.
“After the 32nd year of establishment of the University and after producing half of the working doctors in the country, the university has its own I am confident that the teaching hospital can be run efficiently,” said Dahal. “The government is ready to help the University’s effort.”
Similarly, Dr. Gouri Shankar Lal Das, in his convocation address, asked the students to be society-centered rather than individualistic. 'Our dreams and aspirations may be unlimited, but modernity has its limits, and so does our power. As much as you do in life, be prepared to spend some of it in charity and public welfare,’ said Das
The convocation program awarded certificates to 18 Students of Ph.D., D.M and MCH level, 35 students of M.Phil., 314 of Masters, 52 of Post Graduate Diploma and 1,416 of bachelors from the School of Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Management, Science and Medical Sciences. 209 students from Arts, 225 from Education, 39 each from Engineering and Law, 448 from Management, 777 from Medical Sciences and 101 from Science graduated this year. Out of the total graduates, 992 are women and 113 are nationals of different foreign countries.
43,123 students have graduated from Kathmandu University after the first phase of the 29th Convocation Ceremony. The University also held its 96th Senate meeting before the convocation.
