A letter of agreement (LOA) was signed between Nepal Applied Mathematics & Informatics Institute for Research (NAAMII) and Kathmandu University School of Science (KUSOS) on 15th September 2024 to facilitate the Masters by Research in Bioinformatics program and joint co-supervision of two students enrolled in this program at Kathmandu University to conduct their thesis research project on “Systems Genomics Approach to Predict and Prevent Multi-drug Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis”. The letter was signed on behalf of NAAMII by Dr. Bishesh Khanal and on behalf of KUSOS by Prof. Dr. Janardan Lamichhane.

NAAMII has been working on scientific research in Nepal in the fields of informatics, applied maths, and AI and contributing toward democratizing and decentralizing AI in the world. It has also contributed significantly to Bioinformatics through key research on Systems Genomics Modeling of Multi-drug Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Genomic Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Nepal, AI-assisted VIA Screening of Cervical Cancer microscopy, anomaly detection form endoscopy etc. NAAMII also provides training and internship opportunities on bioinformatics-related themes. The Bioinformatics division is led by Dr. Raunak Shrestha, a Post Doc fellow from University of California San Francisco.

The program was attended by Prof. Dr. Ujjwal Man Joshi, Associate Dean, School of Science, Prof. Dr. Subodh Kumar Upadhyaya, Head of the Department of Biotechnology; Prof. Dr. Kumud Raj Kafle, Head of the Department of Environment Science and Engineering; Prof. Dr. Rabindra Prasad Kayastha, Head of the Department of Mathematics; Prof. Dr. Rajendra Gyawali, Director of NTIC, along with faculty members from the Department of Biotechnology and members of NAAMII.
