SCARE project launches in Nepal

On 25 May 2021, Global Green Growth Institute Nepal, Kathmandu University and University of Bristol held a virtual consultation event to launch the “Climate Change and Sanitation: Assessing resilience and mitigation (SCARE)” project in Nepal. The event was led by Ministry of Water Supply under the chairmanship of Joint Secretary Mr Sunil Kumar Das in a close coordination with Ministry of Forest and Environment (MOFE) and Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM). The main motive of the event was to introduce the research project to the stakeholders and seek their feedback on the project design.

The SCARE project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, led by Prof. Guy Howard from the University of Bristol. Other consortium partners include the University of Leeds, the University of Technology in Sydney, Kathmandu University, Haramaya University (Ethiopia), Kyambogo University (Uganda) and the GGGI. Prof. Subodh Sharma from KU is coordinating the research activities of the project in Nepal. The project aims to develop and apply the methodologies to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from onsite sanitation systems and assess the climate resilience of the sanitation systems. The climate resilience of onsite sanitation systems in 14 communities spread over nine districts will be assessed and GHG emissions from 30 containment systems will be quantified during the 3 years duration of the SCARE project.

The program was attended by more than 50 participants representing government agencies, development partners and private sectors working in WASH and climate change in Nepal. Mr Tiresh Prasad Khatri, Director General, DWSSM, Rowan Fraser, Country Representative, GGGI Nepal and Mr Raju Sapkota, Under Secretary, MOFE highlighted the importance of the SCARE project for understanding the GHG emissions from onsite sanitation systems, their climate resilience and the relevance of baseline information which is expected as project outcomes in the evidence-based policy formulation in WASH sector. Prof. Howard and Prof. Subodh Sharma presented the aims and the proposed activities of the projects. Several participants showed their commitments to support the activities of the SCARE project in Nepal.
