Prof. Badoux wrapped up his 13th visit at Kathmandu University

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma welcomed Prof. Dr. John C. Badoux, a renowned Swiss Scholar, in an interaction program held on 12 March, 2012 at Kathmandu University. He expressed sincere thanks to Prof. Badoux for his decade long contribution for enhancement of academic programs like Bio-Technology, Civil Engineering and Environment Engineering at Kathmandu University. Prof. Badoux is the curator of Happy House Foundation Fellowship, patronized by Mr. Guy Ullens, for the establishment of the Centre for Excellence in Production and Transportation of Electrical Energy (CEPTE/KU), an Energy Research and Development Unit of School of Engineering.
Prior to this program, Dr. Sharma, Prof. Badoux and Prof. Ramesh Maskey had made a three-day-long observational tour to Mustang, a remote mountainous area in the Western part of Nepal. The purpose of the visit was to observe the possibilities of new field of studies for assisting academic programs which were the need of the community and the nation herself. The potential areas were identified as energy, bio-technology, agriculture and tourism.
Prof. Badoux expressed his optimistic remarks over priority areas and urged Kathmandu University to launch such demanded courses for public need. Along with Government, KU has to tie up with private sectors which are interested to join work together, he said.
He further suggested that university should run research and practical based Master and Ph.D. programs. Programs should have to be evaluated with the quality rather than the students’ quantity, he stated. Today KU graduates can be found elsewhere in the world and such appearance proves its good quality, he made a satisfactory remarks.
Responding some questions of senior faculties, he further expressed that there is scarcity of getting good students rather than getting funds to run the programs. Funding can be available for research work from international companies. They want to conduct research work by native researchers. University should be conscious about practical work of the students.
The interactive program was organized by CEPTE/KU. Along with Vice-Chancellor, Prof. PannaThapa, Dean of School of Science; Prof. BholaThapa, Dean of School of Engineering; Prof. Ramesh Maskey; Prof. Sanjaya Nath Khanal and HoDs and other faculties of Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and Department of Bio-Technology interacted with Prof. Badoux in the program.
After concluding the program Prof. Badoux also met with the faculty members of School of Science and School of Engineering. Septuagenarian scholar walked around the university premises and observed labs and class rooms in his eight-hour long stay in the University.
