Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) honored Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, the founding Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University, with the degree of 'Doctor Honoris Causa' in a special ceremony at Trondheim, Norway, on 28 March, 2014.

The Board of the NTNU had decided to award Dr. Sharma for recognition of his significant contribution to the development of higher education in Nepal. The Board stated: “Your work in many ways personifies our university's mission ‘Knowledge for a better world’”.

Dr. Sharma was the first Nepalese recipient of such a prestigious award from NTNU.

At a special ceremony Prof. Gunnar Bovim, Rector of NTNU, bestowed a certificate of Doctor of Honoris Causa' and a golden ring to Dr. Sharma.

On behalf of the Kathmandu University, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Registrar, Prof. Dr. Panna Thapa, Controller of Examinations, Prof. Dr. Sitaram Adhikari, former registrar, and Mrs. Urmila Sharma, spouse of Dr. Sharma, were present in the occasion.

In his reception lecture Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma expressed his gratitude to the NTNU family and remarked that this honour was rather conferred to the ‘academic community of Nepal’.

Prof. Gunnar Bovim congratulated Dr. Sharma. He said that Dr. Sharma was awarded for his unique effort to build a distinctive university in impoverished Nepal. He further remarked that Dr. Sharma's basic idea was that schools and universities should not be an isolated part of society where a select few would have increased access to knowledge, but rather a venue for all to increase the welfare of the entire population of the country.

We, the Kathmandu University family extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma!!
