Professor Dan Shechtman, the 2011 Chemistry Nobel Laureate, delivered Kathmandu University Silver Jubilee Special Lecture on September 22, 2016 at the C. V. Raman Auditorium.Prior to the special lecture, the Nobel Laureate planted Night-Flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) at the Khetan Garden in the university premise.

Prof. Dan Shechtman is the Philip Tobias Professor of Material Science at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. He is also a Professor of Material Science at Iowa State University, USA.

Delivering Kathmandu University Silver Jubilee Special Lecture, Professor Shechtman described the genesis, development and applications of quasi-crystal science. The Nobel Laureate mentioned that his discovery was not taken seriously at the beginning, however, truth prevailed and now quasi-crystal field is a thriving science. Professor Shechtman also stated that among all the lectures he delivered in his recent trip in Nepal, Kathmandu University audience was the best.

This was followed by question/answering session. Several interesting questions were raised by the faculty members as well as the students. The Nobel Laureate was gracious enough to respond them in very entertaining manner.

The Vice-Chancellor of Kathmandu University Professor Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha briefly introduced Kathmandu University and thanked the Nobel Laureate for sharing his important views with the students and faculty members. Professor Shrestha was of the opinion that knowledge should be visible, packable and transportable so that people at large will be benefitted.

The Nobel Laureate was presented the Tokens of Love by the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar and Dean, School of Science.
