On 14 March 2012, MoU has been signed between School of Engineering (SOE) of Kathmandu University (KU) and Himal Power Limited (HPL) for cooperation in “Masters by Research Degree in Analysis of Root Cracks in Pelton runners - A case study of Khimti Power plant”.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Dean SOE and Mr. Tom Kristian Larsen, General Manager, HPL.

The major objectives of the MS by Research Program are:

  1. To identify the stress induced in Pelton Runner which is affected by sand erosion and analyze the causes of root cracks taking a case of Khimti Power Plant,
  2. To propose design conditions, manufacturing and maintenance techniques to improve the life and performance in general avoid root crack in particular.

HPL will provide financial funding of 1 Million NRS and required technical support for this research. The Master’s study will be conducted by Department of Mechanical Engineering. The research will be conducted at Turbine Testing lab under the joint supervision from Waterpower lab at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, Norway.
