With the major motto of transformative education research for sustainable futures, the First International Conference on Transformative Education Research and Sustainable Development was held on October 21 – 23, 2016, Dhulikhel Nepal.  The conference was organized by the Transformative Education Research Center, School of Education, Kathmandu University in collaboration with School of Education, Murdoch University. The conference was supported by UNESCO and Ministry of Education, Nepal.   

Altogether 6 keynotes speakers, 101 oral presentations, 17 posters, 6 research workshops from 14 countries were the attraction of the conference.  The conference is an attempt to contribute to the growing international endeavors of building knowledge about transformative learning, teaching, training and research. 

The conference has brought together practices, experiences and theoretically informed discussion on the need for transformative education and research to focus on the quality, equity and relevance of education.  The conference has strengthened and enlarged the network of transformative practitioners by bringing together institutional and individual partners.  Conference papers will be published in KUSOED’s Journal of Education and Research, Springer’s Journal of Culture Studies of Science Education, and an edited book under the Sense Publisher’s series of Bold Visions of Education Research. The conference website shall contribute to the international dissemination of post-conference products/publications.

At the end of the conference an initiative has taken to form consortium of transformative education research centers of universities so as to take further the agenda of transformative education research and practice in university settings. It was announced that the second international conference on Transformative Education Research and Sustainable Development shall be organised by Kathmandu University School of Education in 2018. The conference motto, themes and dates shall be announced soon.
