Kathmandu University (KU) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, have formalized a new Strategic Partnership Agreement aimed at strengthening long-standing academic, research, and innovation collaboration between the two institutions. The agreement builds upon an earlier Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022 and reflects more than three decades of cooperation across multiple academic fields.
Through this strategic partnership, KU and NTNU seek to deepen scientific and technological cooperation while promoting joint research, education, and knowledge exchange that benefits both Nepal and Norway. The collaboration will support student and faculty mobility, the development of joint academic programs, and collaborative research initiatives designed to address global and regional challenges.
The partnership identifies three key thematic areas for cooperation: energy and climate change mitigation; health systems, public health, and medical sciences; and innovation, entrepreneurship, industry, and digital transformation. In the area of energy and climate change, the institutions will work together on sustainable energy systems, hydropower development, renewable energy integration, and climate resilience. In health-related fields, the collaboration will focus on strengthening health systems, improving public health outcomes, and advancing research on climate-related health challenges. The innovation and entrepreneurship component aims to translate research into practical industrial solutions and support startup ecosystems and digital transformation.
The agreement also emphasizes building long-term institutional capacity through joint curricula, collaborative degree programs, and engagement with government, industry, and civil society. Both universities will jointly pursue research funding opportunities and encourage collaborative projects that generate real-world impact.
Under the partnership framework, KU and NTNU will establish governance mechanisms, including a Strategic Partnership Board and an Operational Management Group, to guide the implementation of joint activities and ensure effective coordination.
This agreement marks an important milestone in KU’s international engagement efforts and reinforces the shared commitment of both universities to advancing knowledge, innovation, and sustainable development through global academic collaboration.
