Kathmandu University, Nepal and Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) of Heidelberg University, Germany signed a MoU at Nepal Technology Innovation Center, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel. The MoU was signed during the formal ceremony which was honored by distinguished guests Prof. Bivek Baral, Vice Chancellor, Kathmandu University, Dr. Biraj Singh Thapa, Registrar, Kathmandu University, Mr. Benjamin Seidel, Deputy Head of German Mission, Nepal, Prof. Dr. Peter Bastian, Professor IWR, Dr. Michael Winckler, Administrative Director, IWR, Heidelberg University, Germany, Dr. Suboor Bakht, Director, Heidelberg University Office for South Asia (HCSA), New Delhi.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Bal Krishna Bal, Dean, School of Engineering, and Dr. Michael Winckler, Administrative Director, IWR. The MoU focuses on long-term collaboration including undergraduate and graduate students exchange, visiting professorship and scientific visits, provision of lectures and seminars, joint research collaboration and mutual consultations between two institutions.

As the first initiative, a Summer School on Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing has kicked off. The lecture series ends on September 25, 2026. The summer school on “Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing” brings together students and early-career researchers from Nepal and Germany for an intensive week of lectures and hands-on training. The school introduces participants to the mathematical modeling of real-world processes and to the numerical methods and computational tools used to simulate them. A total of 45 participants from Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University joined the summer school.

The summer school hosts two lecture series. Lecture Series 1 focuses on Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations, moderated by Prof. Dr. Peter Bastian. Lecture Series 2 focuses on Modelling and Parameter Estimation for ODEs, moderated by Dr. Michael J. Winckler

This is a great initiative and the first German Summer School in Nepal focuses on Mathematics and Computing. This initiation was well appreciated by the Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University and Deputy Head of German Mission, Nepal. Both dignitaries congratulated the organizing committee and are optimistic about this collaboration bringing great research and learning opportunities to university students and faculties
