Kathmandu University (KU) has embarked on a new academic collaboration with the Southasia Institute for History and Philosophy (SIHP), signing a Letter of Agreement (LoA) on September 16, 2024. This partnership aims to offer a one-semester Diploma Course in Archival Studies, a much-needed academic program in Nepal to address the rising demand for professional archivists. The course will be launched in collaboration with the School of Engineering, the School of Arts at KU, and Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP), marking a significant step towards preserving Nepal's rich historical archives.
A joint Steering Committee, comprising representatives from KU, SIHP, and MPP, will oversee the course's development and implementation. This program will be open not only to KU and MPP staff but also to external participants interested in learning how to manage and preserve historical records. Furthermore, the LoA outlines plans to explore the possibility of launching a more comprehensive one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Archival Science and a Master’s Program in History and Philosophy, ensuring that the collaboration has long-term academic potential.
The agreement is more than just a formal commitment; it reflects KU's ongoing dedication to fostering academic innovation Both institutions envision this program as a critical step towards establishing Nepal as a leader in the field of archival studies.
