On 12th June, 2013, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Engineering, Kathmandu University organized a talk program in which Prof. (Ms.) Usha Rani Vyasulu Reddy, Ph.D., an ICT for Development Consultant, UNAPCICT, delivered a talk on “Technology and Society- Young People as Change Makers” at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre, Nepal.
Prof. Reddy elaborated the nature of the ICT sector of Nepal and said that the economy of a country benefits from ICT in 2 ways:
As producer (Sector itself generates growth, productivity and innovation)
As ICT user (ICT use increases the efficiency of production processes)
She explained some real cases where youth have contributed to solve the problem of the society using ICT as a tool. These cases are:
Youth in Action: KopoKopo
Youth in Action: Small Farmers Rural Radio
Youth in Action: What you can do about E waste
Youth in Action: Ushahidi
All the faculties and students of Department of Computer Science and Engineering participated in this program. At the end of the program, Mr. Manoj Shakya, Department Coordinator gave vote of thanks and closing remarks saying that the program benefits the students and motivates them to contribute to the society.
