Dhulikhel, September 17, 2026 - The Department of Management Informatics & Communication (DoMIC), Kathmandu University School of Management, organized a Social Experience Project (SEP) Preparatory Session and Expert Orientation for BBIS students at the Senate Hall, Kathmandu University, under the coordination of Department coordinator Durga Prasad Dhakal. The program followed the 2026 SEP’s theme, “Digital Literacy: From Knowledge to Community,” and focused on preparing students for their community-based SEP activities.
The session introduced students to the purpose of SEP and helped them connect classroom learning with real issues, challenges, and opportunities faced by communities. Experts from Nepal Rastra Bank, eSewa, and Nepal Police shared their experiences in digital finance, cybersecurity, financial inclusion, fraud prevention and detection, and digital literacy.
The program began with an introduction to SEP and a welcome to the guests by Yash Raj Lamsal, Assistant Professor at DoMIC. Students were encouraged to first understand the needs of a community, identify its actual problems, and then develop practical and sustainable solutions.
Cybersecurity and Online Safety/ DySP Jeet Narayan Yadav
The cybersecurity session was led by, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Nepal Police, IT Directorate. He introduced students to common forms of cybercrime, including phishing, smishing, vishing, social engineering, cyberbullying, cyberstalking and online scams.
He explained how cybercriminals often use trusted names and organizations to deceive people. Students were also reminded to use strong passwords, two-factor authentication, updated software, safe internet connections and careful URL checking, and to avoid sharing personal information with unknown people or websites.
The session highlighted that cybersecurity is not only a technical issue. People can remain vulnerable even when digital systems are secure if they do not have enough awareness about online risks.
Nepal’s Digital Financial Ecosystem/ Director Ajit Regmi NRB
Ajit Regmi, Director of the Payment Systems Department at Nepal Rastra Bank, discussed Nepal’s growing digital financial ecosystem. He explained the roles of banks, fintech companies, payment service providers and payment system operators.
Students learned about mobile banking, QR payments, digital lending, digital identity, eKYC and payment infrastructure. The discussion also covered technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, embedded finance and smart contracts.
The session highlighted challenges such as the digital divide, low financial literacy, cybersecurity risks, fraud, privacy concerns and unequal access to digital services. It also showed BBIS students how business, technology and finance are connected in the changing digital economy.
Smartphone Access/Senior Manager Rupesh Neupane
The session from eSewa Limited, led by Rupesh Neupane, Senior Manager, focused on “Beyond the Smartphone.” The discussion explained that digital inclusion is not only about owning a smartphone or having internet access.
Students learned that people also need digital skills, trust in digital services, access to identity and KYC services, and affordable internet. The session emphasized the importance of digital and financial literacy, especially in communities where people may have access to digital tools but may not know how to use them safely.
Students were encouraged to use data and community needs when designing their SEP activities. They were asked to consider simple questions: What does the community need? What problems do people face? What do they already know? What support would be useful?
Connect to Community
The orientation emphasized that SEP should create meaningful and lasting value for communities. Students were encouraged to think beyond one-time awareness programs and consider activities that could continue after their project ends. Possible areas include digital financial literacy, safe online payments, cybercrime awareness, fraud prevention, responsible internet use, and digital inclusion.
The program concluded with the presentation of a token of love to the guests by Dr. Biraj Singh Thapa, Registrar of Kathmandu University. Dr. Thapa said that the University would encourage such programs and provide support at the university level.
