TEACHING AND LEARNING ON ADVANCES IN AQUATIC ECOLOGY AND HYDROPOWER DEVELOPMENT – EUROPEAN EXPERIENCES ON FRESHWATER ASSESSMENT METHODS
Background:
This is in connection with the Staff Mobility for Teaching Mobility Agreement of Erasmus +, an agreement between Kathmandu University and University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna that the AQUATIC ECOLOGY CENTRE (AEC) is organizing an Eight Hours of Teaching for Networking and knowledge transfer – learning by doing, and harmonisation and standardization of field methods and their interpretation. A total of ten participants, interested in learning theoretical exchange on functioning of riverine ecosystems, understand in theory and practice field methods (abiotic and biotic) useful on micro- and meso- habitat scale, and Cause-and-effect relationships of human pressures on riverine landscapes, are invited to attend.
25-28 July 2017, timings: 10-12, Venue: Room 106 in Block 06
Course Contents:
1.riverine landscapes (definitions, general characteristics, types of riverine landscapes) and general limnological concepts and aspect
2.Overview of major human pressures on riverine landscapes such as hydro-power production, residual flow/water abstraction, hydropeaking, morphological impacts, pollution, land use change and their related impacts.
3.Basic of fish ecology, physiology and taxonomy. Introduction to sampling methods in rivers and lakes, method and sampling strategy selection, habitat mapping and fish ecological status assessment.
Speaker is Mr. Paul Meulenbroek, young scientist from BOKU with experience from other countries as he has been collecting fishes in Burkina Faso and in Ethiopia besides Austria. He can provide valuable overview on European concepts on freshwater assessment methods.
