On September 22, 2024, Kathmandu University (KU) and the Kathmandu Institute of Child Health (KIOCH) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing medical education, research, and pediatric healthcare in Nepal. Signed by Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Vice Chancellor of KU, and Prof. Dr. Bhagawan Koirala, Chairperson of KIOCH, the partnership aims to address the pressing need for improved pediatric healthcare and medical research through joint initiatives. Both institutions are committed to sharing academic resources and technical expertise to uplift healthcare and educational standards in the country.

The MoU outlines specific collaborative efforts, including joint research projects, training programs for students and faculty, and the exchange of knowledge in pediatric health and communicable and non-communicable diseases. As part of the agreement, KU and KIOCH will actively participate in each other’s academic programs, with a focus on fostering a culture of innovation and knowledge-sharing. The partnership also opens the door for the development of academic programs tailored to the current and future needs of Nepal's medical sector.

In addition to education and research, the collaboration will play a crucial role in KIOCH's vision of establishing a dedicated children's hospital in Kathmandu, along with satellite hospitals across Nepal. With the combined expertise of KU’s academic excellence and KIOCH’s healthcare focus, this MoU marks a significant step toward making pediatric healthcare more accessible and affordable, while ensuring future generations of medical professionals are well-equipped to meet the country’s healthcare challenges.
