Dr. Mohan Bahadur Chand is a Himalayan glaciologist with over 13 years of expertise in glaciology, climate change, and water resources. He earned his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Environmental Science at Hokkaido University, Japan, where he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Faculty of Environmental Earth Science. Additionally, Dr. Chand holds an MS by Research in Glaciology from Kathmandu University and an M.Sc. in Environmental Science from Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Environmental Science.
Dr. Chand’s research focuses on cryospheric science, water resources, and climate change, particularly in high mountain regions, with significant contributions to understanding glacier/snow dynamics, permafrost degradation, glacial lakes, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), and glacio-hydrological modeling. As a key member of various research projects in high mountain regions, his work addresses the dynamics and impacts of these cryospheric elements on water resources and mountain communities. He is also proficient in the application of GIS and remote sensing technologies in environmental monitoring. His leadership in Himalayan research is recognized internationally, evidenced by his status as a National Geographic Society Explorer and recipient of an early-career research grant.
