Rabindra Bista, Professor of Computer Science, (the Founder of Health Informatics Program in Nepal, Senior Member of IEEE & IEEE Computer Society, and Founding Counselor of IEEE Student Branch at Kathmandu University) received the B.Sc. degree in IT from Sikkim Manipal University, India, in 2004, Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering from Chonbuk National University, South Korea, in 2007 and 2011, respectively, under the prestigious Korean Government Grants namely Korea/National Research Foundation (KRF/NRF) and Brain Korea 21 (BK21).
Since 11th November 2011, he is working in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE), Kathmandu University (KU), Nepal being the first PhD holder in the current DoCSE. He has supervised 30-Master’s thesis and 1-PhD dissertation. Currently, he is supervising 8-PhD scholars and 10 Master’s students. Through different internationally funded projects, he provided scholarship to 4-PhD candidates, research assistantship to 10-students, and internship to 10-students.
He served as the Research Degree Coordinator of the School of Engineering (SoE) for 7.5 years (2011 - 2019) and Coordinator of revived Computer Science Program in the DoCSE for 3.5 years (2011 - 2015). His total grant worth is more than $ 2.5 millions (USD). With the support of NEEM https://neem.ku.edu.np/ Project, he took the leadership to estlablish Master's in Health Informatics Program at Kathmandu University in 2022/23 first time in Nepal. This Master's program was the mother in order to estlablish the Department of Health Informatics at School of Engineering in his leadership. He estlablished and is leading Health Informatics Lab https://hilab.ku.edu.np/ at KU. For the past 15 years, his tremendous efforts went for strengthening and improving quality of Graduate programs of DoCSE/SoE and making the Computer Science program sustainable which was revived in 2011.
On different occasions, he has been felicitated by the President of Nepal, Vice-President of Nepal, Minister of Science and Technology, and Innovation, and Assistant Minister of Education and Sports for his academic and research achievements. He has published about 75 research articles in different international journals, international conferences, and book-chapters. He attended many international conferences in the capacity of the Chief Guest, Keynote Speaker, Invited Speaker, Track Chair, Session Chair, and Resource Person.
In the capacity of Academic and Research Coordinator/Contact Person, he has experiences of implementing many EU-funded Projects-Erasmus Mundus Programs-STRong Ties, INTACT, and LEADERS and Erasmus+ Projects MOBILE+, Merging Voices Consortium (MVC) and other CBHE mobility projects Key Action 1-KA 101, KA 103, KA 107, and KA 171 with Portugal, Poland, Spain, and Turkey. He has facilitated about 100 mobilities of students and staff (teaching staff and training staff) at KU and in many universities of the european countries.
Another invaluable contribution of this person is internationalization of KU thgrough MoUs. He coordinated MoUs of KU/SoE with Turku University, Finland, University of Malaga, Spain, Frederick University, Cyprus, University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal, Bialystok University of Technology, Poland, University of Porto, Portugal, and Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka (HISSL).
He is an editor of PLOS Digital Health journal and reviewer of many top-tier Q1 journals such as Array, EAAI, IEEE Internet of Things, IEEE Access, Scientific Reports, and Sensors.
Recognizing his priceless contributions in academic, research & development, and collaborations, he was promoted to Full Professor of Computer Science as the first Professor of the domain in Nepal. His research interests include digital health, IoT, wireless sensor networks, AI/ML/DL, and software engineering.
