Dr. Bijendra Shrestha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Kathmandu University, Nepal, with over 12 years of academic and research experience. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering in 2010 and Master of Science by Research in Engineering in 2013 from Kathmandu University. He earned his Doctor of Engineering in Food and Agricultural Intelligence Engineering from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand, in June 2024.
Dr. Bijendra Shrestha began his academic career as a Lecturer at Kathmandu University in September 2013 and currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research primarily focuses on the application of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometric techniques for the rapid, non-destructive characterization of biomass (wood and agricultural residues), wastewater, and agricultural products. His broader research interests encompass renewable energy technologies, including biomass energy, anaerobic digestion (biogas), improved cookstoves, waste-to-energy systems, and biomass pellet technologies. He is also actively engaged in research on biomass combustion emissions and their impacts on indoor and outdoor air quality, environmental sustainability, and human health. His work aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and support evidence-based approaches for resource recovery and environmental management.He has led and contributed to several research projects funded by national and international organizations such as the University Grants Commission–Nepal (UGC), the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the University of Nottingham (UK), and the Global Challenges Research Fund. He also served as the Project In-Charge (First Phase) of the USD 10 million KOICA-funded project titled “Integrated Rural Development of Nepal through Strengthening the Research and Development Capacity of Kathmandu University”. The project focused on renewable energy, public health-related livelihoods, and agriculture and rural development.
Dr. Shrestha played a key role in establishing the Regional Cookstove Testing and Knowledge Center (RTKC) in April 2025 under the Air Pollution and Health Research Laboratory (APHRL) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kathmandu University. He currently serves as the Faculty In-Charge of RTKC and Co-Lead of APHRL, supporting research and testing activities related to clean cooking, renewable energy technologies, air pollution and its impact in health.
