Hydropower Technology Exchange Activities between Nepal and China and Signing of MoU between Kathmandu University and China Three Gorges University in Yichang City, China

A high-level Nepalese delegation led by Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Founder Vice-Chancellor of the Kathmandu University (KU) paid a visit to the Yichang City of China to attend a seminar entitled ‘Hydropower Technology Exchange Activities between Nepal and China’ at the invitation of Yichang Municipal People’s Government. The visit took place from 04-10 December 2013.The main objectives of this visit were to exchange cooperation between educational establishments for Hydropower Development, to enhance bilateral partnership and to promote research and development in hydraulics between Chinese and Nepalese Institutions.

 

The other members of the delegation include Prof. Dr. Ramesh Kumar Maskey, Associate Dean of School of Engineering, KU, Prof. Dr. Arbind Kumar Mishra, Campus Chief of Institute of Engineering, TU, Dr. Subarna Das Shrestha, President of Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN), Er. Sher Singh Bhat, Officiating Deputy Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Er. Bhoj Raj Regmi, Freelance Senior Hydropower Consultant and former GM of NEA and Dr. Meg Bahadur Bishwakarma, GM of HydroLab Pvt. Ltd. The seminar chaired by Mr. Jiang Xiaobing, the Vice General Manager and Chief Engineer of China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) in Yichang City. On that occasion, the Nepalese delegation made presentation of four papers (See List of Experts and the Papers below) regarding Nepal’s hydropower potentials and opportunities for investment and cooperation on educational exchange and research in the same field. The delegation also visited three big hydropower projects namely: Dagangshan (2.6 GW), Geheyan (1.8 GW) and the world famous Three Gorges Hydropower Project (22.54 GW) with the support of CGGC. The Chinese hydropower experts shared their experience and expertise with the Nepalese delegation and expressed their willingness to further promote cooperation in the areas of hydropower development in the days to come.  The delegation also visited China Three Gorges University (CTGU) and held discussion with the President Prof. Dr. He Weijun, accompanied by high ranking officials of the University in cordial atmosphere. On that occasion, the Founder Vice Chancellor of KU, Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, and the President of CTGU, Prof. Dr. He Weijun signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of their respective Universities on 9 December 2013 with the objective of promoting and strengthening bilateral cooperation in hydropower studies and other academic and research areas between the two universities.On behalf of the Nepalese Delegation, Prof. Sharma thanked the Yichang Municipal People’s Government for the cordial invitation for mutual benefits.
