MEDIA NOTE AND NEWS ON HIGH LEVEL MEETING ON KUSOM POLICY LAB:
PIONEER AND INNOVATIVE INITIATIVE FOR EVIDENCE-BASED POLICY GOVERNANCE REFORM IN NEPAL
Meeting Venue: Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Singh Durbar
The High Level Meeting on KUSOM Policy Lab (Pioneer and Innovative Initiative for Evidence-based Policy Governance Reform in Nepal) was held on April 21, 2022 at 3 pm at Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Singh Durbar. The meeting was chaired by Secretary Mr. Suresh Adhikari, MOFAGA in the auspicious presence of Kathmandu University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa. The welcome note, importance of Policy Lab, and its genesis was presented by Dr. Gopi Khanal, the joint secretary of MOFAGA. The conceptual and methodological dimension of KUSOM Policy Lab was presented by Dr. Purna Nepali, Associate Professor and Program Director, Master of Public Policy and Management, KUSOM. In response to two presentations, Dr. Mukti Rijal, representative of Policy Research Institute (government think tank), Mr. Tilochan Pokharel from Nepal Administrative Staff College, Dr. Diwakar Luitel from National Planning Commission, and Mr. Kumar Prasad Dahal, Directorate of General from Local Training Development Institute put their views and comments for making policy lab prosperous as well as effective in days to come. Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle and Prof. Dr. Devi Bedari, the Dean of KUSOM also expressed their views on the conceptual, experimental, and practical dimension of policy lab that can contribute for evidence based policy reform at federal, provincial, and local levels. At the end, Secretary Mr. Suresh Adhikari and Prof. Dr. Bhola Dahal provided their important and valuable remarks, highlighting the urgent need for making policy lab effective to contribute the effective evidence based policy governance in Nepal. From this meeting, the KUSOM Policy has been established and institutionalized at Kathmandu University to serve the state for evidence based policy making and governance based on principle ‘University for State and Societal Transformation’. The meeting ended on a positive and an optimistic note. The key features of the policy lab are briefly stated below:i) KUSOM Policy Lab as Public policy think tank, ii) The Lab acts as Centre of excellence in public policy and governance in Nepaliii) MPPM Outreach: University for State and Societal Transformation: a) University for State Transformation, and b) University for Societal Transformation, iv) Lab Approach and Method- Design thinking and human centric innovation-DDEv) Policy Communication.vi) KU Policy Endowment Fund for Sustaining the Centre of Excellence.
