Prof. Dr. Bhupal G. Shrestha from the Department of Biotechnology, Kathmandu University, and his colleagues recently published their paper "Chemical Composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities of Mahonia napaulensis DC. bark from Nepal" in the journal BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, a Q1 journal with an impact factor of 3.3.
The study evaluated the anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of the methanol extract of M. nepaulensis. They also characterized the chemical composition of the plant by LC-MS/MS analysis using various assays. This is the first kind of such study to be performed for this plant species. Dr. Shrestha and his team were able to report dose-dependent moderate antioxidant and anticancer activity due to the synergistic effect of different phytochemicals of the plant, such as dihydro berberine, d-berbamine, (S)-glaucine, etc., which they identified using the LC-MS/MS analysis.
