Admission Announcement for

Kathmandu University (KU), School of Science announces admission open for PhD course in Environmental Science. The PhD course is supported by the project “Establishing a Collaborative Effort to Assess the Role of Glaciers and Seasonal Snow Cover in the Hydrology of the Mountains of High Asia.” KU is a project partner with Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences/National Snow and Ice Center (CIRES/NSIDC), University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. In collaboration with Asian partners, this project is designed to make a fundamental contribution to the improved understanding of the water resources of High Asia: provide an accurate, comprehensive, systematic assessment of the snow, glacier melt, rain and ground water contribution to river discharge. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION INTO PhD IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Students having completed a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science and other related field with minimum 2.5 CGPA or 50% or more in aggregate marks are eligible to apply. Details of eligibility criteria is available in the website of the DWork experience in relevant fields and experience of field research, data analysis and scientific writing will be an advantage. Priority will be given to qualified female candidates, marginalized groups and candidates with sound health and high altitude field work experience. AREA OF RESEARCH TO BE INVOLVEDDetermination of separate contributions of seasonal snow and glacier ice melt to basin discharge across the study region (Langtang Valley and other river basin to be decided) using degree-day, ablation gradient, and other, melt models. Compare/Validate these results for selected river basins using isotopic and geochemical tracers in hydrologic mixing models, and estimate the contribution of groundwater and rainfall to these rivers using the same mixing models. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONSApplication forms are available at the administration office, School of Science, Block 06, Dhulikhel, Kavre, or on-line at the website of the DESE, KU (PhD Application Form).
